About Sundowner Beach
Where Sundowner Beach now stands there was previously a home owned for fifty years by Baseball Hall of Famer Warren Spahn. “Infield” was one of several modest beach bungalows owned by Spahn along this stretch of beach.
As recently as 2008 the Spahn family still owned “Infield”, “Outfield” and “The Mound” in this location. As the last Spahn property standing, in 2012 the Spahn family offered to donate “Infield” (the house but not the lot) to the Anna Maria Historical Society. The society had identified a site at the bay end of Pine Avenue close to City Pier, where they planned to create a Baseball museum in the restored building. Sadly it was not possible to raise sufficient funds to move and restore the building and the family sold the property as a vacation home to a couple from New York.
In 2019 “Infield”, the last of the Spahn’s properties on Anna Maria was demolished to make way for a new contemporary family beach home. Sundowner beach is now a vacation home owned by the Allen family who lives on another beautiful beach at Sandbanks in Dorset, United Kingdom.
